Seven Days in Japan

A Kansai loop — Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Himeji, Kobe — built around the one direct route that still runs from Nanjing. Six nights, two hotel bases, no rail pass needed.

7 days / 6 nights Nanjing ⇄ Kansai (KIX) ≈ CNY 9,100 per person Verified 20 Aug 2026

01The recommendation in one paragraph

Fly Nanjing → Osaka Kansai direct and stay in Kansai for the whole week. Nanjing lost its direct Tokyo service in February 2026, so a Tokyo-based trip now costs a connection each way plus a ¥28,000 Shinkansen round trip — poor value on seven days. Kansai puts four world-heritage cities inside a 60-minute radius. Base in Osaka for two nights, Kyoto for four, and buy individual tickets: the 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000 and this route uses roughly ¥16,000 of rail, so the pass loses badly.

05What changed in 2026 — read before booking

Flight capacity from China is still reduced

China's November 2025 advisory against travel to Japan has been renewed repeatedly and remains in force as of August 2026. Chinese carriers cancelled 51 China–Japan routes, including Nanjing–Tokyo Narita, which ended on 26 February 2026. Nanjing–Osaka Kansai survived and ran around 16 weekly flights as of June 2026, which is why this itinerary is Kansai-based.

Practical consequence: fewer daily departures means less recovery room if a flight cancels. Build a buffer day at home either side, and prefer a refundable fare.

The visa fee rose roughly fivefold on 1 July 2026

The consular fee for a single-entry visa went from CNY 145 to CNY 715; multiple-entry from CNY 285 to CNY 1,430. Mainland applicants still cannot submit directly to the consulate — applications go through a designated agency, which adds its own service fee. Single-entry validity is now six months with a maximum 15-day stay, and processing has shortened to roughly 3–5 working days.

Dual pricing has arrived, starting with Himeji

From 1 March 2026, Himeji Castle charges non-residents of Himeji City ¥2,500, up from ¥1,000. It is based on residency, not nationality, and everyone under 18 now enters free. This is currently a short list of sites, not a nationwide policy, but budget an extra ¥1,500–5,000 across a trip like this.

Kyoto's lodging tax is now the highest in Japan

Since 1 March 2026 it runs on five tiers, per person per night: ¥200 under ¥6,000; ¥400 from ¥6,000; ¥1,000 from ¥20,000; ¥4,000 from ¥50,000; ¥10,000 from ¥100,000. It is charged on top of the quoted rate and usually collected at the property. The ¥49,999 / ¥50,000 boundary quadruples the tax — worth checking if a room sits near a threshold.

Skip the Japan Rail Pass

The 7-day ordinary pass is ¥50,000, rising to ¥53,000 through overseas agencies from 1 October 2026 (the official website is holding the lower price for now). This route uses ¥16,420 of rail. The pass only pays off on itineraries with three or more long Shinkansen legs — a Kansai loop is not one of them.

Tax-free shopping changes on 1 November 2026

Japan switches from an instant register discount to a departure-airport refund model. If your trip falls after that date, keep receipts accessible in hand luggage and allow extra time at KIX.

07Two things that will decide how the trip feels

Start early, twice. Fushimi Inari on Day 4 and the Arashiyama bamboo grove on Day 5 are both effectively ruined after 09:30 and both are genuinely quiet at 07:00. These two early starts are the single largest quality difference available in this itinerary, and they cost nothing.

Carry cash. Kuromon and Nishiki markets, smaller temples, and many family-run restaurants are cash-only. Kinkaku-ji sells tickets for cash. Budget ¥10,000–15,000 per person in hand and withdraw from 7-Eleven or Japan Post ATMs, which reliably accept foreign cards.
